The oldest film competition on the mountains was born in Trento in 1952, when Trentino and its Dolomites were at the centre of the world mountaineering scene. And every year since 1952, the festival has taken us on a journey of discovery of admirable feats, of distant worlds, of inviolate or fragile environments, of men and women devoted to respecting the mountains and dedicated to challenging their own limits.

Mountains and Cultures

The mountain in the heart. From 1952 to the present day.

The Trento Film Festival, the oldest and most prestigious international event dedicated to the mountains, was born in Trento from the collaboration between the CAI Club Alpino Italiano and the Municipality of Trento and consolidates, year after year, its role as an unmissable international event for lovers of the mountains, exploration, life in the 'highlands' and environmental issues.

In over 70 editions, the Festival has constantly broadened its artistic horizons and content. While the first edition of 'The Mountain Film Festival City of Trento' in 1952 saw the participation of seven nations with 39 films, today the festival has 12 sections, which welcome works from all over the world on the theme of 'mountains and cultures', awarding the best with the coveted 'Golden Gentian', along with numerous special prizes.

Places of the Festival

During the days of the Festival, strolling around Trento, it is impossible not to notice the numerous references to the blue of the iconic gentian, visible in the centre of the Trento Film Festival logo.

In spring, banners with the faces of the national and international protagonists, who each year enrich the festival's rich programme of events, stand out in the streets and squares of the historic centre. In addition to the works in competition - films, documentaries, short films - there are mountaineering meetings, debates, theatre and music performances, event evenings and round tables that transform Trento into the international capital of the mountains.

Edition after edition, Piazza Duomo, Piazza Cesare Battisti, the Teatro Sociale, Piazza Fiera and the streets of the historic city centre have become the stage for some of the undisputed protagonists of world mountaineering, a place where the relationship between man, mountains and nature can be discussed, a meeting place for names of the calibre of Reinhold Messner, Walter Bonatti, Cesare Maestri, Simone Moro, Hervé Barmasse, Adam Ondra, Dennis Urubko, Alex Honnold and many others.

MontagnaLibri

First organised in 1987 and held annually, "MontagnaLibri" is an international showcase for mountain publishing. Each year, all the publications entered are presented in a large hall specially set up in the historic centre of Trento, in conjunction with the Film Festival.

It is a unique event, offering enthusiasts the chance to explore all the latest publications linked to mountain themes, exploration, adventure, mountain cultures, climate change and nature issued in the last 15 months, by freely browsing and consulting the copies on display.
